Donate Backpacks and School Supplies Now Today, more than ever, schools require students to come prepared with more of the tools needed to succeed. If a student does not have those tools, they not only fall behind, but are faced with the additional stigma of being from a low-income family. Most working poor and low-income families in Marin County spend the majority of their income for rent and have little left for basic necessities such as clothing, food, healthcare, and education. The Back to School program provides parents with the security of knowing their child has the tools he or she needs to begin the school year. Many low-income families simply do not have the income to purchase backpacks and school supplies for their children. Participation in the Back to School program has tripled since 2003, highlighting the great need that exists in our community. Ritter Center collects these school items throughout July and through the first ten days of August and then distributes them most often the day before San Rafael schools begin the new school year in mid-August. The following is a list of school supplies that can be donated for this program:
Ritter Center is also partnering with Renew Computers to provide as many refurbished computers and printers as possible to students. If you have a gently used computer that has a 1 Ghz processor or higher, you can take it directly to Renew Computers at 446 Du Bois Street in San Rafael.
